One of the most common questions I receive as a holistic nutritionist is what to do after someone’s indulged. And the first thing I tell them to do is ditch the guilt.
It happens to all of us (even holistic nutritionists). We either have too much sugar, food, or alcohol. Or we realize we haven’t been prioritizing our sleep, exercise, or meditation (or all of the above).
We’ll berate ourselves for “going off the rails,” and then throw up our hands and think, “Why bother? I’ve already ruined my program.”
But know this: our bodies don’t know the difference between someone else yelling at us or our own thoughts, so STOP IT! When you catch your inner voice turning into a bully or an abusive coach, notice it and make an effort to speak to yourself the way you would want someone to speak to your child or loved one.
If you notice you’ve “gone off the rails,” good for you! You’ve noticed it, you ARE invested and committed to your health, so just pop back on. Those rails are always there for you.
Every new day is your next opportunity to engage in at least one good habit. It doesn’t have to be an overhaul, it can start with a wholesome breakfast, a walk or fitness class, or drinking some detoxifying tea (I make one with ginger and turmeric). Even just making your bed every morning! Any of these steps will make a world of difference when you’re feeling down on yourself. They serve as a gentle reminder that you do value your health, you’re not guilty of anything, and you do have the power to care for your body.
