After soaking up the last few drops of sunshine this week, we know it’s only a matter of time before we’re shivering in our Ugg boots. Once the cold weather hits, it’s a lot more challenging to stay active, and get fresh air–all we want to do is hibernate, but I’m urging everyone to resist that feeling, just a little bit.
During the chilly months, I try to prioritize these seven things to stave off winter blues, and keep my mind and body feeling alert and inspired:
1. Get lots of sleep.
2. Move your body, preferably outdoors.
3. Drink warm, spicy teas, with cinnamon, cardamom, and turmeric.
4. Start your day with a warm breakfast, like oatmeal topped with nuts and berries.
5. Eat seasonal foods, like roasted root vegetables.
6. Prioritize foods with vitamin D (to make up for less daylight), like salmon, tuna, cod, dairy, eggs, mushrooms, yogurt, zucchini, and tomatoes.
7. Reduce stress with meditation, saunas, or hot yoga or pilates.
These are just a few of the things I like to do for myself when I start to feel the draw of winter hibernation creeping in. And the mood boost I feel from all of these things is incredible–maybe even enough to make me love winter? Maybe…
