Late August Balance: Savouring Summer While Preparing for Fall
How to squeeze every drop out of summer without the September stress
Published August 20, 2025 | Estimated reading time: 6 minutes
There's something uniquely bittersweet about late August. The peaches are at their peak, the evenings still hold that golden summer light, but you've started noticing a few trees already showing hints of colour (too soon!). One day brings a blazing heatwave, the next surprises you with crisp morning air. The mosquitoes have finally started to fade, but now the wasps have arrived, making outdoor dining a little more complicated.
Meanwhile, everyone's already planning their fall schedules. Those late August emails start flooding in—sign-ups, calendar invites, schedule changes—and suddenly your once-loose summer days feel like they need to be color-coded just to keep up. Early alarms are creeping back in, routines are tightening, and it can feel like structure is taking over before you’re ready. Whether it’s school pickups and practices, work projects ramping up, or simply trying to carve out time for self-care in the midst of it all, the shift can feel like a lot at once.
Here’s the permission slip: you can plan, but things will always change—and that’s okay. You’ll just make another plan and adjust.
Make the Most of Peak Season Produce
August is when summer produce reaches its absolute best. Peaches, cucumbers, corn, zucchini, and berries will never taste better than they do right now.
One of my favourite discoveries this week was a simple breakfast sandwich that celebrates this peak season bounty: deep red tomato slice, crisp cucumber rounds, homemade pesto, and a perfectly fried egg on toasted sourdough. The magic happens when the runny yolk mixes with the tomatoes and pesto, creating this incredible sauce that ties everything together.
Why this matters: You're not just eating well—you’re marking time, celebrating what's perfectly ripe right now while creating something substantial enough to fuel busy days ahead. In Ayurvedic tradition, eating seasonally helps your body naturally transition between seasons, supporting your digestive fire as it adjusts to changing rhythms.
Navigate Virgo Season Energy Wisely
Late August brings us into Virgo season, and with it, that familiar urge to organize everything perfectly. As a Virgo myself, I know this struggle intimately—that internal pressure to have every detail mapped out and every system optimized. While this energy can be helpful for preparation, it can also create unnecessary pressure to have everything figured out immediately.
The key is channeling this organizational impulse without letting it overwhelm your remaining summer enjoyment. Instead of trying to overhaul your entire life system, focus on small, meaningful preparations that actually serve you. Remember: plans are living things. They can be adjusted as you go—perfection isn’t required for them to work.
Permission slips for late August:
-
Celebrate yourself (birthdays, achievements, small wins) without guilt
-
Let your routine evolve instead of forcing it into place too soon
-
Protect your energy for what actually matters to you
Release Anticipatory Stress From Your Body
If you're feeling that familiar September anxiety creeping in—that sense of "everything's about to get busy again"—your body is probably holding tension you don't even realize.
Quick stress release sequence you can do anywhere:
-
Shoulder rolls: 5 forward, 5 backward to release upper body tension
-
Gentle neck stretches: Look left, right, then tilt each ear toward shoulder
-
Hip circles: Standing or sitting, make slow circles to unlock lower body stress
Do this whenever you catch your mind racing about fall schedules, deadlines, or changes coming up. The goal isn't to eliminate all stress about transitions, but to move the worry out of your body before it settles in and becomes your new normal.
The Both/And Approach
Here's what I've learned about seasonal transitions: the pressure to immediately shift gears often robs us of the gifts that each season still has to offer. Late summer has its own wisdom—it teaches us about abundance, about slowing down before the natural acceleration of fall, about savouring what's perfectly ripe right now.
You can absolutely squeeze every drop out of August AND feel ready for fall. It's not either/or.
Small ways to honour both:
-
Freeze fresh herbs in ice cube trays with water for easy winter cooking
-
Plan one special end-of-summer moment (a late evening walk, reading outside before the sun sets, or organizing your favorite summer photos) while tackling one small fall preparation task like getting a programmable coffee maker for easier mornings
-
Create a gentle morning routine for darker days: enjoy your tea or coffee in bed for 5 minutes before starting your day
-
Stock your freezer with smoothie packs using peaches, blueberries, or nectarines
Moving Forward
As we move through these last weeks of August, remember that transitions don't have to be jarring. You don't need to flip a switch from summer mode to fall productivity. You can ease into change while still honoring where you are right now.
The (peaches are perfect), the light is still golden, and you have permission to enjoy both while thoughtfully preparing for what's ahead. That's not indulgence—that's wisdom.
