GOOD CLEAN FUN

I’ve never been much of a drinker. I drank for a bit in university, but I hated the taste (hello, big into flavour over here, if it wasn’t already obvious), and I really couldn’t hold my alcohol. It wasn’t a big deal or a big decision for me, it just wasn’t my thing.

I don’t need to preach about the health impacts of alcohol consumption, but when asked about shifting away from a lifestyle of drinking, here’s what I share:
  1. Moderation is important, but it’s even healthier to abstain if you’re open to it. Even a small amount of alcohol in your system impacts your body’s ability to sleep, digest food, and regulate moods.
  2. I’m proof that you can still have fun and be fun if you don’t drink (just ask my friends!). I get that your first few sober parties might feel a little weird, so I recommend doing some homework beforehand. Prepare yourself with small talk, and conversation starters. And if your friends are the type to ask, be prepared with an answer for why you’re not drinking. Any answer is acceptable (it’s really none of their business), I just want you to feel comfortable and not “put on the spot” if asked.
  3. Your body doesn’t burn fat if there’s alcohol in your system, it’s too busy detoxing.
  4. A drink or two will stimulate your appetite, and suppress leptin, your “I’m full” hormone. So you're more likely to overeat.
  5. When you skip the booze, you won’t have to hit snooze, and you’ll wake up with all of your fun memories of the previous night intact 😉
Nowadays it’s even easier to skip alcohol thanks to all of the tasty mocktail and alcohol-free options on the market, like Seedlip or Ceder’s. Kombucha is a great substitute too, with the added bonus of probiotics!
